A new program launched in 2014 by the Board of Mission & Action provides seed funding to individuals in the church who wish to start a new service or mission venture, whether short or long-term. We are pleased to announce the award of our first grant to Sophie Randolph to support her volunteer work in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in the summer of 2014. Sophie is a sophomore at Harvard University and a graduate of our Youth and Confirmation programs.
Sophie will spend a month in Haiti volunteering with the English in Mind Institute teaching English to adults and volunteering at local orphanages. In her own words, “What fascinates me most is, that despite being prevented from healing before being hurt again due to international involvement, Haiti still maintains an exceptional outlook epitomized by the proverb ‘Depi gen lavi, gen lespwa.’ Where there is life there is hope. It’s as simple as that. As they exist currently Haiti is very isolated, due to the unique nature of their language. This is definitely limiting their ability to become functioning members of a global community. Haiti is an immensely hopeful place and offering my service by teaching English and volunteering in other ways I will be helping Haitians build their tool kit for creating an infrastructure that will facilitate advancement in the other realms such as health, education, and government.”
