Dear Church Family,

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterpiece The Lord of the Rings, an intrepid group sets out on a journey to save the world against formidable odds.  It isn’t long before the energy and purpose so present at their departure gives way to the reality of their predicament.  They become literally and figuratively lost in the dark Mines of Moria.  Gandalf, their leader, has the whole group sit down.  Then, Frodo, the smallest of them carrying the biggest burden confides, “I wish it need not have happened in my time.” “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

I wonder if we are at a similar moment. …
