New book read to feature classic “Jesus and the Disinherited”
- Date: Wednesday, February 15, 2017
- Time: 9:00am–10:30am
Pastor Brent will be hosting a book read on Howard Thurman’s classic Jesus and the Disinherited, a text that helped to shape the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s work and theology regarding civil rights. From the book cover is this line, “Thurman’s work reaches past anger and distrust toward a vision of unity.”
The purpose of the study will be conversation and sharing. The short (102 page) text will provide ample material not just for understanding how it spoke to the Civil Rights movement in the 1960’s, but also how it can speak to our current situation and all of the tensions around race, sexuality, religion, gender identity, immigrant status and more.
In order to keep the conversations lively and allow all to participate, Brent is going to limit sections to six people. Currently the plan is to hold one section on Wednesday mornings, but other sections can be added if there is interest. If you want to participate, but can’t do so on Wednesday mornings, there is a place on the sign-up sheet in the JE Room to make that known.
Part of our discussions will also help Brent bring the information back to the Massachusetts Conference Board of Directors who also will be reading and discussing it.
