Lenten Study: The Four Gospels – Sunday Session
- Date: Sunday, March 29, 2015
- Time: 11:00am–12:30pm
- Location: Jonathan Edwards Room
The Bible is not content to present a single story about the life and meaning of Jesus. It includes four complementary, yet very different accounts. The Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke and John were written in different places, by different people, with differing narratives and meaning.
Lent has often been described as the time in the church calendar when we walk beside and with Jesus on the way to the cross and beyond. This year we will do just that–by engaging these stories side by side and back to back. We will study these texts for meaning, context and history. We also ask questions, find beauty and think about what they mean to and for us.
The goal will be to reach one gospel per week. You will be amazed at what jumps out as you read them back to back and side by side. We will start with the oldest Gospel, Mark, and proceed through to John. Each Sunday the gospel to be studied will be incorporated into worship in a number of ways. On the final session of this five-week study, we will write our own gospels, answering the question, “How do you understand Jesus’ good news?” Get ready for a Lent to remember!
Schedule
Sunday sessions will be held after worship (March 1 – March 29) along with a light lunch and child care. A Monday evening option will also be held (March 2 – 30, 7PM)
